John has been involved in pipe bands from a very young age, first learning snare drumming with the Irish Fusiliers Regiment of Vancouver BC with his father. In his teen years he spent 5 years in the cadet movement spending his summers attending Music School becoming the lead drummer thence Drum Major of the Senior Cadet Military band.

Eventually John became involved with a local Legion Pipe band and won the Drum Major /contest in the first Legion Highland Games held in BC, winning the Bass Drumming in the same contest. From here he moved into the competition scene, part of a very successful Grade 2 band through the mid 80's before joining the 6 time World Champion, Simon Fraser University Pipe Band. This became a players dream, winning 3 World and 1 Drum Corp Championships through the mid-late 1990's.

John has been involved in the local pipe band scene for over 40 years as a player, organizer, President and now an Adjudicator. He was directly involved in the Expo 86 Opening Cerimonies - Drum Major, Expo 86 Highland Games - Drum Major, Senior Drum Major in /Tattoo's and Major Highland Games in the Pacific Northwest over the past 25 years.

As the current Senior Drum Major of the BC Pipers' Association and the Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band, John is still living his dream.
